HAVEN SERVICES
Residential Shelter
Our Residential program is Oakland County's only 24-hour emergency shelter exclusively for domestic violence or sexual assault victims and their children. The shelter location is "semi" secret in an attempt to make it more difficult for batterers to find their significant others. HAVEN does take men into its shelter when they are the victims of domestic violence. Domestic Violence is defined as "violence within any intimate or familiar relationship". Shelter will take emancipated minors, but not children without a parent. Shelter is also for sexual assault survivors who are afraid to stay in their own homes. The stay for shelter is approximately 30 days, although exceptions can be made under extenuating circumstances. The average stay is three weeks. While in shelter residents are provided with counseling and assistance with finding permanent housing. Help to obtain financial assistance, medical care and long term counseling is also offered. The counselors in the shelter are not therapists, but are trained to advocate for residents in financial matters, housing and other needs of daily living. They hold group and individual sessions to empower residents to put their lives back together. If counseling therapy is requested the residents are referred to HAVEN's Counseling Program. There are also specialized programs and activities for children who stay in shelter. They are enrolled in public schools and can attend group and individual counseling.
