Child Development Specialist

As Oakland County’s only comprehensive non-profit agency for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 20,000 people each year. HAVEN’s mission is to eliminate sexual assault and domestic violence and to empower survivors through advocacy and social change in and around Oakland County.

Bachelors degree in child development, teaching or equivalent experience; Experience in planning children’s activities, outings and creative play within a residential setting; Knowledge of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse; Good understanding of child development and common behavior problems associated with DV/SA issues; Excellent conflict resolution skills; Ability to work a flexible schedule is required including evenings, weekends and holidays; Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license; Ability to demonstrate a positive, caring and non-judgmental attitude towards others with a sincere passion for working with kids and teens. Primary responsibilities include: Develop age appropriate activities for children residing in our shelter; Interact and encourage children to express themselves by building rapport, while providing fun and creative outlets; Care for children in shelter playroom during parent counseling sessions; Coordinate child enrollment in local schools and obtain school supplies; Coordinate summer youth program and art projects for various events; Work with parents to encourage positive parenting skills; Continuously work to create and maintain a safe and warm atmosphere, and generally pitch in and respond to the needs of a 24/7 communal living environment.

40 hours per week. Mon: 9:30 am-5:30 pm, Tue, Wed, and Thur: 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm Fri: 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. Weekend coverage as necessary.
