Intern Programs

Position Summary:
Under the guidance of the START Program Director, the contingent START Forensic Nurse Examiner will assist in administering the Safe Therapeutic Assault Response Team program.  Interacting both in-person and via phone with clients needing urgent medical services, the contingent START Forensic Nurse Examiner will ensure that critical information and communication is provided to the client in an appropriate manner that gives reassurance and clear direction.  Forensic examinations, preparation of the examination results and proper reporting required.  Serving as a subject matter expert, the contingent START Forensic Nurse Examiner will participate in required legal proceedings including the provision of testimony.  Additional program administration such as interaction with other HAVEN teams, contributing improvement recommendations, and building awareness with external business partners required.  Understanding of all compliance requirements.  Training of new contingent team members on processes, policies, and guidelines.  

Position Qualifications:
Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan with emergency department or women’s health experience and experience with sexual assault survivors.  Bachelor degree in nursing preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience required.  Must be trained as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.  In-depth knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault and intimate partner issues from an empowerment philosophy. Excellent written and interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to women’s issues and cultural diversity.  Outstanding organizational skills.  Flexibility in schedule required; will need to fill 60 hours of on-call shifts per month.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse with current MI license

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to respond in person to survivors in Oakland County with 1 hours’ notice
  • Must have valid, unrestricted driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • Assists and support in the management of the HAVEN START program
  • Works as a team with First Response Advocates to implement trauma informed best practices
  • Performs medical forensic examinations of sexual assault and domestic violence victims
  • Provides at least 60 hours on call per month with One 24 hour holiday yearly
  • Attend at a minimum of 6 monthly START meetings
  • Precepts Forensic Nurse examiners
  • Provides fact\expert witness testimony as needed
  • Promotes greater awareness of services for both victims and a wide variety of professionals
  • Advocates for victims of sexual violence and domestic violence
  • Assists with patient satisfaction surveys and program evaluations
  • Ensures adherence to HAVEN policies and START practice guidelines and compliance requirements

  • Participates in agency events that further agency goals of education and outreach
  • Provides expert witness testimony as requested
  • Seeks opportunities to contribute to the systems change plan and appropriately documents events on agency system change forms
  • Stays updated on latest research, data and best practices for populations served
  • Stays updated on other program policies/procedures within the agency
  • Understands funding requirements that affect populations served
  • Understands the limitations of the agency’s resources and adapts to them
  • Updates supervisor on program activities/trends or community concerns
  • Uses effective time management skills
  • Works with development staff when necessary to promote/educate community about new services
  • Any other tasks as assigned
